Maramures is a gorgeous site indeed. It is well known for it's traditions and for it's wooden churches. The oldest one is located in the village of Ieud and dates back to 1364. It survived the large Tatar invasion from 1717 and bares all the traditional elements of the wooden church construction style. It's paintings can be seen even today. Under it's rooftop the Ieud Codex was found, document which is considered to be the oldest writing in Romanian language (today it is kept in the archives of the Romanian Academy in Bucharest). It's small forms as well as the beautiful paintings make it a remarkable site to visit.
